Considering an autism assessment in a foreign country can feel overwhelming, especially when trying to navigate diagnostic processes across different languages and cultures. At Hola Therapy, we support expats, immigrants, embassy workers, remote workers, and multicultural families from around the world who are seeking clarity, self-understanding, or a formal diagnosis for themselves or their loved ones.

Why do adults seek an autism assessment?

As awareness and understanding of autism have grown, more adults are recognising experiences and behaviours in themselves that may be consistent with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). For some, the possibility of autism has only recently emerged. For others, an assessment follows years of wondering why certain social situations, sensory experiences, routines or relationships seem to require more effort than they do for other people.

Many adults who contact Hola Therapy describe having felt different from others for much of their lives. Some have spent years masking or camouflaging autistic traits, consciously or unconsciously changing their behaviour, suppressing natural responses, or learning strategies to fit into social and professional environments. Over time, this can require considerable effort and may contribute to social exhaustion.

Sometimes a partner, family member or therapist first suggests considering an autism assessment. However, many adults pursue an autism diagnosis primarily for greater self-understanding, rather than for a specific practical purpose such as workplace accommodations.

An assessment can help provide a framework for understanding longstanding patterns, strengths, challenges and individual needs.

Why might a child need an autism assessment?

For children, parents and teachers are often the first to notice developmental or behavioural differences that raise questions about autism. In other cases, a pediatrician, doctor, psychologist or other professional may recommend an autism evaluation.

Parents may seek an assessment because their child is experiencing differences in social communication, play, friendships, flexibility, behaviour, sensory processing or adapting to everyday expectations at home or school.

An autism diagnosis in childhood can help families better understand how their child experiences the world and identify appropriate support. Assessment results may also help inform early intervention, therapy and school-based accommodations or support.

Most importantly, understanding a child's individual strengths and needs can help parents, caregivers and educators respond in ways that support their development, wellbeing and future success.

What are common signs that may lead someone to consider an autism assessment?

Autism presents differently from person to person, and no single behaviour means that someone is autistic. However, children and adults may be referred for an assessment because of experiences such as:

  • difficulties understanding social communication, expectations or social cues

  • feeling exhausted from trying to fit into social situations

  • masking or changing behaviour around other people

  • highly focused or restricted interests

  • a strong preference for predictability and established routines

  • difficulty adapting to unexpected changes

  • sensory sensitivities involving sound, light, touch, textures or other sensory experiences

Some of these characteristics can also occur with other conditions, including ADHD, anxiety and other developmental or psychological conditions. A comprehensive autism assessment considers the person's broader developmental history and individual presentation rather than relying on any one characteristic.

Bespoke Autism Assessments at Hola Therapy

We offer comprehensive autism evaluations tailored specifically for you. Our diagnostic process is thorough, neurodiversity-affirming, and grounded in evidence-based practices and instruments. As part of our assessment process, other potential diagnoses are explored and ruled in/out based on initial screening and interviews. It is common in an autism assessment to also assess for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), specific learning disabilities, social pragmatics disorder, and mental health diagnoses such as social anxiety and generalized anxiety.

A central component of our evaluation process is the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition), widely recognized worldwide as the gold standard in autism assessment.

What is the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2)?

The ADOS-2 is a standardized, semi-structured assessment that evaluates communication, social interaction, play, and imaginative use of materials.

Rather than relying on questionnaires or self-report alone, the ADOS-2 creates natural opportunities for social interaction, allowing a trained clinician to observe specific behaviors and communication styles in real time. The ADOS-2 is adaptable for all ages and developmental levels, ranging from non-verbal toddlers to speaking adults, making it one of the more flexible diagnostic tools.

Interpreting ADOS-2 Results in a Multicultural Context

An assessment tool is only as effective as the context in which it’s interpreted and the understanding of the clinicians interpreting it. Standardized tests like the ADOS-2 were largely developed within very specific cultural frameworks. When applied in a dynamic, international environment like Mexico City, diagnostic interpretation requires nuance and cultural competency.

At Hola Therapy, we interpret ADOS results through a multicultural and multilingual lens:

  • Language Considerations: We evaluate how code-switching, language fluency, or growing up in a multilingual environment influence social communication styles.

  • Cultural Nuances: Expressions of eye contact, body language, personal space, emotional expression, and social norms vary widely across cultures. We ensure these differences are understood rather than miscategorized as pathological.

  • Neurodiversity-Affirming: We focus on understanding your unique profile, strengths, and support needs, rather than viewing your differences strictly as deficits.

Why It Matters

Receiving an accurate evaluation and a formal assessment shouldn't mean having to fly back to your home country or making do with an assessment that overlooks your cultural and linguistic context.

Question and Answer: Autism Assessments in Mexico

Are autism assessments available in English in Mexico City?

Yes. Hola Therapy offers autism assessments in English, Spanish, and Swedish.

Do I need a referral for an autism assessment?

No referral is needed; you can contact us directly to get started!

How long does the assessment process take?

Initial interviews, collecting information from collateral sources, testing and then interpretation and write up of an assessment is timely. The assessment phase usually lasts 4 weeks and then the interpretation and write up (once all informaiton is received) typically takes another 2 weeks.

Will my diagnosis be recognized in my home country?

We provide a complete report describing the instruments used, the results of each test and our clinical findings. Recognition for specific purposes varies by country, and we’re happy to discuss your situation during an informational call. However thus far, all assessments have been accepted in all countries and states that they have been used in. We provide assessments directly to both Canadian and U.S. government services based in Mexico City and therefore are familiar with the requirements for validity.

How much does an autism assessment cost?

$4000USD. This fee covers the costs of assessment for ASD as well as any other differential diagnoses, such as ADHD, specific learning disability, mental health etc.

Does my insurance cover my autism assessment?

Many insurers cover the cost of this and the assessment will be claimable. They often request a referral letter from us that outlines the purpose of the assessment and the assessment tools that will be used. Once provided, some insurers have approved the assessment within 24 hours. If you are unsure, we encourage you to call your insurer. Surprisingly, we have had clients who do not have this service covered while in their home country, such as the U.S., but are entitled to this service under the foreign benefits listed in their plan.
