If you’ve been thinking about starting therapy, there’s an unusual window in Mexico when finding the right therapist at Hola Therapy can be significantly easier: July and August.
For most of the year, Hola Therapy is busy. Our therapists’ schedules are often full, and at particularly high-demand times we can be waitlisting up to 30 people in a month. Even December, which you might expect to be quiet, can remain surprisingly busy.
Mid-year, however, Mexico changes.
Starting Therapy: The July/August summer shift in Mexico
A large proportion of the people we work with are international residents, expats and multicultural families. Every summer, some of our clients who arrived in Mexico on two- or three-year international placements reach the end of their contracts and move on to their next destination.
Other clients travel home for extended summer visits, take planned breaks from therapy, or reach a natural ending point in their therapeutic work.
At exactly the same time, fewer new clients tend to contact us about beginning therapy. The result is a brief and somewhat unusual phenomenon at Hola Therapy: therapist availability!
While availability varies by clinician and specialty, during July and August almost all of our therapists typically have at least a couple of openings. That means you may have more choice about the psychologist you work with, appointment times and the particular expertise you're looking for.
By September, as schools restart, international arrivals settle into Mexico City and everyone returns to their routines, those spaces tend to fill again.
It’s also a good time to organise an assessment
The same seasonal pattern applies to psychological and diagnostic assessments.
If you’ve been considering an assessment for ADHD, Autism or a Specific Learning Disorder, summer can be an excellent time to get the process underway.
Assessments involve several stages and may include clinical interviews, standardised psychological testing, developmental history and information from other relevant people in your life.
For children and adolescents, we may also need information from their school. If teachers are away for the summer, that part of the assessment may need to wait until school resumes in August or September. However, we can still begin the process now, completing other components so that teacher input can be added once school returns.
There’s no perfect time to start therapy
People sometimes wait for life to become quieter before starting therapy, or for a new year to align with their new years goals.
Summer can offer something slightly different: a natural transition point. Routines change, schedules can become more flexible, and there may be a little more space to think about what you want from the months ahead.
And at Hola Therapy, unusually, there’s also more space in our calendars.
If you’ve been considering psychological therapy, ADHD or Autism assessment, or an evaluation for learning difficulties, July and August may be one of the best times of the year to get started.
